What does contention ratio mean?

1:1 means the contracted bandwidth is dedicated. A ratio such as 1:10 means capacity may be shared with up to ten service profiles. The lower the ratio, the more predictable the performance. The committed information rate and burst policy must also be confirmed.

What is committed information rate?

The committed information rate (CIR) is the minimum bandwidth committed under the service. A service may have a lower CIR and permit temporary bursting up to the port speed.

What is route diversity?

True diversity considers access fibre, ducts, exchanges, landing stations, backbone paths, power feeds and facilities. Two commercial services are not automatically physically diverse.

What is a rate limit?

A rate limit controls the maximum traffic throughput. Options may include a fixed contracted cap, CIR with bursting, 95th-percentile billing or on-demand usage, depending on the service.

What is an IRU?

An indefeasible right of use (IRU) is a long-term contractual right to use specified network capacity for an agreed period. It is normally structured with an upfront payment and may include separate annual operations and maintenance charges. It provides usage rights—not ownership of the cable or underlying infrastructure.

When should we compare a lease with an IRU?

A recurring lease is usually more flexible for shorter or changing requirements. An IRU may be relevant where capacity demand is strategic, predictable and long term. CloudINX can request both structures for a like-for-like commercial comparison.
